तारापीठ में देवी सती के नेत्र गिरे थे, इसलिए इस स्थान को नयन तारा भी कहा जाता है। यह पीठ पश्चिम बंगाल के बीरभूम जिला में स्थित है। इसलिए यह स्थान तारापीठ के नाम से विख्यात है। प्राचीन काल में महर्षि वशिष्ठ ने इस स्थान पर देवी तारा की उपासना करके सिद्धियां प्राप्त की थीं। इस मंदिर में वामाखेपा नामक एक साधक ने देवी तारा की साधना करके उनसे सिद्धियां हासिल की थी।
